im a freshman in H.S. and i c this all the time....mainly cuz i do BOTH of them :P. but poking the girl in the side gives ya a good feel of what their side feels like, we try to see their reaction (to kinda see if we had a chance) , and sometimes girls will jump away making their boobs bounce. :-P. and the hug is usually a way to get girls to giveya a hug so you can show that u are friends with them and arent a prude-*** fag. also if they are hot, then ur friends think you are cool for huggin the babes.

You can't expect high school guys to know this one...It takes many years to know why...IF they figure it out at all.
Here's why...
Guys don't know how to approach girls...So...they "pick" on them. The joy is from being able to approach and get a little giggle from you without being rejected.
Random hugs...Sometimes guys will interpret body language and only sometimes feel that it's safe to approach for a hug. Guys are afraid of approaching for a hug and then you girls making a big deal about it and rejecting the idea.

Its a form of flirting, brings back to the childish days when you picked on the girl you liked.
Also its cuz they want attention and yur not giving it.
My suggestion: let them know you sincerely dont like being poked and arent interested in talking to them. just say "go away"

well, I've long since been out of high school, but it sounds like they're flirting or trying to cop a cheap feel... personally, I've only done it to women I've liked...

They just want to see your body jiggle when they poke.
They just want to feel your roundness and smell you when they hug.
