Hello, you did not say where in the south you are, so I'll have to tell you what we do in N. Georgia. Trees planted in the ground are cut back to the ground around november, december, and mulched till spring or no chance cold damaging weather. Little plantlet will start showing through and you remove the mulch. If your banana is in a pot and you want to maake it a house plant, then keep your temperture between 50 and 76 degrees, don't worry so much about water, the trunk holds the water like a reservoir. There is nothing more discusting than a rotten banana tree. If you do not want to bring in your potted banana then just cut it back and keep in your garage aor basement and forget it till spring, bring it out and start to water it, not drown it, when you see new green leaves start to fertilize it with 20-10-20, it would be very good for the plant to repot into a pot 1-2 sizes bigger than the one it is in now, new dirt, new pot, new spring = happy banana trees!!!Mabe you live far enough south you could have some fruit too! Good luck and hope we have a short warm winter.

if ur tree is in a pot then u can bring it inside when the freeze is coming. if it's planted outside about the only thing u can do is wrap it with sheets. i never did anything with my bananas and they always did fine, but i'm in so. fl and we may get 1 freeze a year if that.good luck

the best thing you can do is when a cold snap is coming, wrap the entire plant with old quilts or blankets and if possible a source of heat(light bulb or something not flammable).be sure to unwrap it if temps get above freezing so it can get sun.
