The trick in trick or treat refers to a mean trick that the kids will do if they don't get a treat. Way to teach extortion to kids!
The tradition from when I was a kid was that we would vandalize the house of someone who did not give out treats. This was nothing that caused permanent damage, usually smearing soap on windows or throwing toilet paper in the trees. It was just messy and annoying.
The tradition stopped after some kids took things too far and began throwing rocks through windows or flattening car tires. We soon saw police cars roaming the streets and irate home owners suing parents.
Now, if the porch light is not on, the kids just go on to the next house.

No , if they say trick then, the person who opened the door does the trick, but normally it should be a treat as candy.

The kids say trick or treat, but I don't think they actually expect a response. People just give them candy and that's the end of it. I f someone were to say "trick" the kids would probably be like what the hell? Just give us our candy.

you only trick the people you hate by throwing toilet paper in their trees or placing a shitt bomb in a paper bag on their front door. eggs are another good revenge. thrown at the neighbors cars and houses makes a fine mess to clean.
kids don't go around to houses much any more because we have this big bullshitt scare of pedophiles here. you never know who your neighbors are any more. ridiculous and stupid I think. but I usually hand out laxatives to the kids to make a interesting nite for them on the way to other houses!
trick or treat!
AMERICANS! got love em!

In the "OLD DAYS", the child would have to perform a trick if the candy giver so asked. Thank goodness I was never asked - not very much of an illusionist.

If someone says trick it is usually in gest. It's not serious. I have never in all my years of trick or treating or having my kids do it have I had someone seriously ask for a trick or perform a trick.

If you refuse to give a treat the kids will do a prank on you. But no one ever does that they usually always have candy with them.
