She has been taking it the entire time. I don't think it was given to her by a doctor. She has had a drug problem in the past. Does anyone know of birth defects caused by taking Xanax.

She is being incredibly irresponsible! I sneak the occasional soda or something, but to take a prescription drug as habit forming as Xanax while pregnant is ridiculous. I can't believe anyone would be so selfish. It's meant also to be a "short term" medication, so she may have a habit going.

You might want to talk to your friend about getting some help. If she stops now, she may be able to prevent further damage to her baby. If she thinks kicking a few pills is a burden, imagine how life would be with a handicapped child because she was too weak to take care of herself.

It falls under "Category D" according to the FDA, which means it is KNOWN to cause harm to the unborn child.

This was taken from webmd.com
Alprazolam is not recommended for use during pregnancy due to the potential for harm to an unborn baby. Consult your doctor for more details.

This drug passes into breast milk and may have undesirable effects on a nursing infant. Therefore, breast-feeding while using this medication is not recommended. Consult your doctor before breast-feeding.

From another medical site:
Special information if you are pregnant or breastfeeding

Do not take this medication if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant. There is an increased risk of respiratory problems and muscular weakness in your baby. Infants may also experience withdrawal symptoms. Xanax may appear in breast milk and could affect a nursing infant. If this medication is essential to your health, your doctor may advise you to stop breastfeeding until your treatment with this medication is finished.

Its a category D medication to take during Pregnancy. That means there is a 100% chance that it can harm the baby. From severe birth defects to still birth, if it even makes it that far. If she has not done enough damage already, which she more than likely has, she could also have late term miscarriage. No offense but your friend is an idiot and proves to be an unfit mother already if she cannot kick the drug habit for 9 months to make sure her baby has a safe and healthy pregnancy and makes it into the world that way.

Alprazolam is in the FDA pregnancy category D. This means that alprazolam is known to be harmful to an unborn baby. Do not take this medication without first talking to your doctor if you are pregnant or could become pregnant during treatment.

Nonteratogenic Effects: It should be considered that the child born of a mother who is receiving benzodiazepines may be at some risk for withdrawal symptoms from the drug during the postnatal period. Also, neonatal flaccidity and respiratory problems have been reported in children born of mothers who have been receiving benzodiazepines.

That means the baby becomes addicted to xanax before it's born and is at risk for breathing problems and lack or muscle control.

Good luck to your friend.

She should check with the doctor. But if the info is just for you...you can call a local pharmacy and ask them what that medicine is rated for pregnant women. They should be able to help you. I took Effexor which is a anti depressant during my whole pregnancy...it was ok'd by my doctor. Sometimes you have to weigh the risks. Either way, my baby was happy and healthy...no problems.

Well, if it isn't prescribed, then she's not going to talk to her doctor about it. It sounds like she doesn't' have much regard for her unborn child if she's willing to risk it harm. Check out babycenter.com and type in xanax. You should get a few articles on it.
