In some regards. The biggest problem with that belief is that people overlook to much of the past. I think we've improved over the drowning, burning & hanging of "witches" of the Puritans.
Most Native Americans would say that this isn't the best, but would admit it's better than the Manifest Destiny & Trail of Tears Eras. Child labor laws allow kids to be kids, not underpaid little ragmuffins with no education & no future.
The priests & ministers are as corrupt as they ever were, difference is, enough have been caught to let people know how some of them are predators & hypocrites. Hard to imagine that God would just pick some to go among us and be child molestors or thieves.
Slavery is gone, most would agree thats a step forward. Those that can't agree with that should find themselves, their spouses, & children up for sale.
The people from the mid east scream about invasion of their privacy, racial profiling, etc. yet Americans of Japanese descent were put in camps in WW II.
It's great that America no longer drafts from those too poor to get out of the draft with education excemptions. Now we have Iraq though.
Usually people are overlooking the positives & concentrating on the negatives, or at least the negatives that help strip them of thier power. Are we less moral, or more moral? Depends.

The US is fine and people just need to stop complaining and live their lives. For those who are always complaining, you need to just stop and look around. Not metephorically, literally. How's your life? Can you pretty much do whatever you want in life? Yes, if you have a brain you can make money in a million different ways. You have all the freedom you need. Yeah there's a few laws that you may not agree with but that doesn't mean the whole system is whack. Mistakes are made by the government, but all in all just shut up and live your life. Making world changing decisions and trying to make every last asshole happy is not an easy thing, and I'm sure most complainers would not do much better. Yeah they may make their people happy, but their just going to piss off a whole other group of people. Just LIVE PEOPLE and stop complaing about the government!

I'd say yes, many things have gone down-hill from what it used to be. One example, violence was not shown on television and now it is and people watch it without it affecting them like they are immune to it. Our society is much more corrupt than it once was and I think TV contributes.

Throughout history, every great civilization has had a peak and decline. We are no different. Its a combination of its citizens taking their country for granted, and the jealousies of surrounding nations wearing them down over time. (Rome, Mayans, Incas, etc.)

Yes, day by day. Wars and rumors of wars. Because iniquity shall abound, the love of many will wax cold.
