(Nothing like watching 'smokefree Ohio' volunteers taking a smoke break...)

Just like extremist environmentalism, healthism is a societal problem of groups who believe health and longevity is absolute and that people must live as long as possible beyond reason or will.

Healthism is typically behind:
-- Illogical Smoking Bans: Yes, the tobacco companies are overpaid and put too little interest in health risks of their additives. But then again, so does Pepsi and Coca Cola. (The measure individual average consumption in GALLONS PER WEEK when Two Liters per week is damaging enough. Diabetes anyone?) No one should smoke anything at all. Even cloves, incense or theatrical cigarettes should someone exhibit a smoke allergy of any kind.

-- Anitbacterial everything: cleanliness is beyond reason these days... bacteria of a healthy or malignant nature are being killed daily out of fear when bar soap and water takes care of most cleanliness issues.

-- Right to Life: The spirit of this means that people have a right to live when they make their own medical decisions, but it's being stretched into Pro-Life, where people do not have the right to choose anything BUT life, which ceases making it a right but a law. Quality of life concerns were called into question when Terry Schiavo was catatonic and someone wanted to euthanize someone who in great probability would never function ever again.

-- Corruption: the easiest answer of why someone would champion Healthism concerns is easily answered by the fact that taking other people's rights away is something they believe they are empowered to do. Or at the very least should be done. "Live and let live" doesn't exist to them: it's "live or be forced to live".

-- Ulterior Motives: Not to mention it's easy to justify a bloated not-for-profit budget when expensive 'fundraisers' that are made more for appearance and entitlement than purpose give lots of groups reason to be greedy and disanthropic. When saving 1,200,000 people who are suffering from cancer are given 'information' and 'resources' instead of free or reduced treatment, or grants or loans to help with their medical bills (you know, stuff that MATTERS.) you can have 1,000's of fundraisers a year and make yourselves REALLY VISIBLE quickly.

-- Playing games they don't have the right dice for: Not to mention the ability to bankroll Political Action Committees (We call them special interests.) to defeat or promote politicians or measures (which makes members more interested in giving once more) that add 5 new bad laws for furthering corruption for every one good or modest law they approve.

Keep this in mind when voting this next couple of weeks: MAKE UP YOUR OWN MIND. People tell truth, and lie at the same time, credibility is an illusion, and the basic truth of health issues and common sense is this: the law is not common sense.

I believe that everyone is entitled to their own opinion. But when one opinion is being 'pushed' by a deified interest who wants to be justified in their own existence by spending millions to control people's decisions who haven't made up their own mind about something is the root of the problem: disinformation is everywhere. No one should be absolutely trusted. Not even me.

Anti Smoking groups are as much to blame for corruption as tobacco companies are for one good reason: without a tobacco company, they won't have a need to exist. And whatever will they do next summer when in the Hamptons when the sponsors of a non-profit company want a soiree?

That's awesome. Even though they are smokers, they are responsible enough to know that smoking in indoor public places is bad for others' health. That's what you call being considerate.

Anyway, I don't see the connection between mom and pop business and smoking bans. I don't care if you're Altria or Ma's Convenience Store, smoking affects the health of other people. Ruin your own lungs in your own space.
