Because they want to garner the support of labor and make it appear they care about poor people.

As an employer myself, if the minimum wage is raised, my employees will all demand higher wages too, because now their wage is less satisfactory than it was before. Prices will rise partly to cover this increase in costs (or worse, I will let people go) to keep costs stable.

The minimum wage only applies to business' that employ a certain minimum amount of people. Mom and pop stores are not affected

Same people who wonder why large companies are hiring fewer teens, and more part-time retirees, who at least know what hard work is and will show up. If you are going to pay stupidly high wages for collecting shopping carts or putting french fries in little bags, at least you want people who won't spend all their time texting their friends.
