Even though I'm British, I can see the point about why the Americans drop out a lot of "U"s, basically, it doesn't sound right, Americans spell the word the way it is pronounced, the British don't. Even though I'm British (and I spell like a British person) I actually prefer the American way of spelling something like "Colour" < See, I know I spelt it like a Brit, but its just what you're taught to do at school, the British way of spelling is confusing! BTW, my surname is Knox!

when they live in a country obsessed with "I" why would they need "U"???

the comment regarding an Australian dictionary - wow I had no idea that Oxford was in Australia??????? Because that's the ONLY dictionary that we recognise for schooling. An Australian dictionary is full of our slang and in a joking way is used to help tourists understand the language we developed through the cockney convicts, but i guess there has to be some ill educated pomes that feel the US has it right, how else would Blair have got in to power?

i think of you will come across the respond lies in coaching i've got suggested this many situations till now, faith don't have been taken out of the curriculum interior the united statesA, although, by utilising faith, I advise, all religions could learn...that is going to shrink lack of information and enable the student to come back to an advised opinion/decision, as adverse to an uninformed blindly led decision, and perchance no longer even a decision in any respect (in the event that they have been raised in any particular faith) only to function, i do no longer advise coaching religious coaching as a manner of forcing it upon you, purely to comprehend it, and to learn different relgions around the globe etc... that's the main distinction and why you possibly wont get as a lot fundamentalism interior the united kingdom as adverse to america of a interior america of a someplace interior the area of sixty 5% of the inhabitants are church goers, in assessment, purely 5% of the inhabitants interior the united kingdom are yet another assessment, relgious coaching isn't taught in public faculties interior america of a, yet interior the united kingdom, that is an portion of the curriculum so lower back, coaching is the foremost, no longer weekly sermons by utilising some evangelist like Ted Haggard I trust you although, this place a great deal shocked me once I first got here across it....notwithstanding I could admit, i've got visited a great sort of alternative predominantly American web sites, and that is fantastically a lot the comparable, only no longer as vocal as this website

The original settlers in New England taught English Websters spelling rules, which omitted the "u" in words ending in OUR.

Our spellings are a product of history, influenced by Shakespeare and Chaucer amongst others.

Both are acceptable.

I'm sorry, but you above, with the ink saving, can I just say, Americans are the world's biggest polluter, with over 20% of the world's CO2 emissions.
American English seems to me as though it is an over simplification of British English; the one true English. They couldn't spell the words with a 'u', and so left them out. They needed to change words like 'categorise' into 'categorize', as they're too stupid and think that the words should be spelt and they sound. Contractions also seem to be another problem with the American language.

Every time we omit the "u" from words like "humor" and "color," we save ink. This in turns brings environmental benefits to the planet.

Think of all the billions and billions of tons of ink that has been saved over the years by shortening the spelling of such words.

Conversely, think of all the damage being done to the planet by using the longer British spelling of words like "colour" and "humour."

I say drop the "u," so that we can conserve ink and keep the earth cleaner.

Well they gave them to us in the UK silly!

American spellings are so much easier! Its English but not as we Know it!

Australians have 'Australian' dictionaries not 'English' ones! Now that's strange! And a bit cheeky if you ask me! We invent a nice complicated language and spend years making sure everyone on earth can speak it and the blooming Aussies say its Australian and not English after all!

On some DVDs a language you can select along with Swahili and French is 'Australian'! Flipping nerve I say! Lets send in the troops!

There isn't a place for them. We create them as we go along with our sentences. Therefore if you need one poof it just pops up, it's not like there sitting somewhere waiting to be used. It's simply a script that gets reused when one feels so inclined.
