If you mean violence shown on TV or on the news I think that it does desensitize some people. Newspapers seem less graphic in their reports. But some level of desensitization does occur. I also think it inspires others to commit violence. There was a recent school shooting, and the young killer, when asked why, said, "Remember, Columbine."

"Uhh Yeah, I remember, but what does that have to do with it?" is a reasonable question. Unfortunately for the weirdos that do this sort of thing, their reasoning is less than sensible.

But there are many people, who are still upset by violence.

The first daytime bank robbery in the United States was committed by the James Gang shortly after the Civil War. Newspapers sensationalized that and subsequent James Gang robberies, and there were many imitators. Now sticking a gun in a bank teller's face is commonplace. Now we even have video games that teach kids to shoot to kill reflexively, and they make excellent marksmen out of kids who have never held a gun.

Constant exposure to anything will desensitize a person to it. And yes, seeing violence and the other aspects and results of crime do in fact desensitize people over time. But it takes it's toll on people, nevertheless, and they turn away from it, escaping into other things as they can.

We see it in the movies and on television, video games...it's everywhere...we are desensitized several times a day, I think people still care just on a lower level.
