Very hard to say. Brittain, USSR, and the USA all made big contributions in different ways. First, Brittain held Germany off so they could not take over all of Europe. If Brittain had not held out, the USA wouldn't have had a war to come into. Second, the USSR, who began in the war as allies of Germany, when Germany turned against them that forced them into the war on our side. The provided the greatest amount of manpower, as well as their winter that froze up a lot of German troops. Finally, the USA, who even before they joined the fight, had been providing Brittain with a lot of equipment. When they joined in with a lot of manpower and even more modern equipment, that spelt the death-knell for Nazi Germany. Which of the 3 contributed the most? Each of the three would claim the honours. I don't know if any could have done it without the other two. So all three should get the honour equally. Now if we ask which of the countries put up the most heroic, noble fight? I would say Brittain, no question about it. They were in there from the beginning, and held on when just about all of Europe had succumbed. Which country could have prevented the war in the first place? Any of the three, and we can add France to that list. Any one of them had stood up to Germany even a few months before the war, saying "you go no further. Our troops are here." , Germany would have stopped and the army would have mutinied and arrested Adolph. He became unstoppable from the German point of view once he got Czechoslovakia.

The lack of knowledge of these answers are almost sickening. It was a joint effort. Russia had signed a non-aggression pact with Germany, (they agreed to leave each other alone) and Germany was over-running countries all over Europe. Britain, along with Russia was the only 2 European countries not under German control. Britain was at war with Germany before Germany broke the pact and invaded Russia. Britain was fighting a valiant fight with Germany . The USA had their usual isolationists that were against getting into the war in Europe. When Japan attacked the US in 1941, that all changed. The US was in the war, officially. Now,before that, the US was supplying tons and tons of war materials to Britain and when Stalin (Russian leader) came begging for materials after the German attack, the US supplied tons and tons of war materials to Russia. Germany had Russia on the ropes and were within an eyelash of defeating Russia at Stalingrad. Russia finally halted the German offensive and started driving Germany back and Stalin was now prodding the US and Britain to start their offensive. This took pressure off the Russian forces. The US and Britain were building up for the invasion into France plus fighting Japan in the Pacific. Russia lost millions of lives, that's true but their government was partly responsible for that because of their non aggressive pact with Hitler instead of preparing for war. Russia only fought the European front while Britain, Australia and the US fought the pacific front also. IT WAS A JOINT EFFORT. All of you Russian fans need to read a little before you make the wild guesses. The amount of lives lost does not determine the main contributor to the war effort.

The Soviet Union. Something like over ten percent of its population died in the war, and had Hitler not attacked the USSR he might have held onto Europe. The war was won on the Eastern Front.

We have to give credit to the Soviet Union - they held the East Front of Germany pretty well, and beat us to Berlin. I would Google that country and I shouldn't be too far off. (I'm not a commie, I just have to admit they did well in that war.)
