Probably my fault; I should have been more clear. Sorry about that. Okay, my question is, should I be allowed to pass out social issues flyers WITH the candy to the older trick-or-treaters? These are not religious flyers, they are about a social issue. I figure since some people pass out religious flyers INSTEAD of candy, then it should be alright to pass out harmless awareness flyers WITH the candy. Now do you see what I mean? I hope so. Anyway, is that alright or not?

I do not think its in the spirit of Halloween to pass out flyers.

No, only because the small children can't read anyway and chances are parents will just throw them away. You could find many other ways to raise awareness in your area about whatever social issues are important to you. Good idea, but not really appropriate for Halloween. It might even hurt, rather than help your cause. Halloween isn't about you and your issues, it's about kids getting candy. Maybe send the trick or treaters off with a short verbal message (depending on the nature of the cause you're working for)

I understand the seriousness of getting people to be more aware, but as a parent....I am taking my kids trick Or treating and I would be very upset if I found an awareness flyer in my children's bags. This is not a time for Proclamations or Protesting. I think there has to be a better way to get this point across. Tonight should be about the kids.
Let them just be kids!!!

As a mom of "younger ones" and a mom of one whos now 13, it all depends on the "social issue" and to what age group your thinking of handing these out too...

Is it "VOTE for Cindy for Class President!"

or is it "Birth Control Pills cause Blood Clots that KILL" ?

It honestly depends on the topic. Is it essentially harmless, OR could it be something that could end up "biting you in the butt" so to say.... As a parent, would YOU want your child subjected to this flyer in order to get one more piece of candy?

My advice, be careful....some may appreciate the information, while others may be bitter and indifferent. Its a great excuse for someone to egg your house! ; )

This is a freedom of speech issue, and also something going on on your own property.

As long as it's not a hate-flyer or somesuch... I think it would be perfectly legal to pass out flyers to your older visitors... I'd recommend not giving them to the younger ones for 2 reasons... Not spoiling their fun, and not wasting your flyers, which the kids would just throw in your lawn.

You'll still probably clean up a lot of them in the morning though. :)

(Please note.. I am NOT a lawyer.. so when reading "I think it would be perfectly legal" remember the key word is "think")

I am working on a play (childrens theatre) and the director gave everyone flyers and told them to give it to the peole that give them candy. Or they could leave it at home with their parent to hand out with candy.

NO! keeping the spirit of Halloween does not include your proactive awarness hand out. Let the kids and adults have fun. There is just too much seriousness, we all deserve a break!

I am not certain how well it will go over, especially since you run the risk of the kids not reading about it anyway.

You may even get a parent coming back to discuss it with you.
