Speaking out one's mind or public speaking is one of the worst fears of people. Take consolation in the thought that you are not alone. Who knows the person whom you are speaking to may also be anxious. This could be overcome; however, by constant practise. Gather courage and start participating in discussions. No guts no glory! At first you will not be able to say much but the more you participate and speak up, the more you will gain confidence. Don't be afraid to commit mistakes. You'd be surprised when you'll learn that nobody even noticed. So start now and say anything (even a short sentence or two) to people. Sooner or later, you will be expressing yourself in many sentences. Try it, it worked for me.

I have been like you, perhaps at your age. Now, i think i have a fair command over the language. How, that was possible? The following things made it possible:-

1. Visit Libraries, religiously and read English magazines avidly. If you have British Council Library, become a member or any other library having a number of English magazines , journals and books. Start with an author, whom you like. Try to go for books of your favourite author. Then, go in for another one, similar to your favourite author. Thus, cultivate a taste for reading.

2. Subscribe to some English Magazine and read it regularly. Letters to the editor, might be interesting for a beginner like you.

3. Listen to English News channels. In our periods, we were advised by the teachers to listen BBC News, for they had a poor opinion about the English of Indian News readers. But, you may now listen to all news channels.

4. Start communicating with others in English. Do not be discouraged by your initial hiccups, which you will over come over a period. What is important is that you review your own progress, without any feeling of low self-esteem.

Generally, make good eye contact, this is an important step. Choose a topic that you are comfortable talking about. Don't be afraid, chances in life come when you least expect them. My mother has always told me that I've never met a stranger! The next person you talk to could turn out to be a very good friend.

I will tell you what I do. Being a speaker to the public, I often feel the way you do but I build confidence by speaking in front of a mirror and also by reading out loud. Its a different thing to do but it works. Good luck brother!

............do some short 6 week courses on english literature and english grammar so you grasp the use of technical, thought, and verbal processes better, then practice structure and content by regualrly sending questions to this site. With constant practice you will soon begin to notice a difference in your speed and delivery skills.

Language is one small part of communication. The most importanr factor of communication is the message. If you are sending your messages in a way that other understand it perfectly, then there is no problem with your communication.
