Anyone have any idea what a monkeys chuff is and where the saying originated from?

Erm.... where I come from (the north of England), a chuff refers to a lady's... erm...personal passage. (Eg, in the TV show 2 Pints of Lager, a woman has just had a baby and complains "I've got a chuff like a wizard's sleeve!")

People also say "chuffin' hell" up North to avoid the f-word.

When I was a kid, for a while people used to say "I couldn't give a chuff/stuff" instead of "I couldn't give a damn" - "I couldn't give a monkey's chuff" has rather a nice ring to it though!

We don't know for certain, most of it being oral tradition. But as far back as ancient Greece, there is a report by Herodot about a custom among some tribe, where a man was chosen by casting lots to "run with the wolves", and if he could abstain from human blood for seven years he could come back as a human. In most early agricultural societies there was a belief that certain humans could change their shape and transform into an animal, mostly the main predator of the area. In India it's the tiger, in Africa the lion, in South America it was the Jaguar, etc. There is no reason to suppose that our own ancestors were any different. The belief that human witches could change into wolves, but also cats, foxes, and hares was still current as late as the late 19th century all over Europe. I know a handful of old people here in Ireland who are still telling those stories, firmly believing in their factuality.
