When I start it,it makes a grinding noise as it's running.I returned it,installed a new one and it's doing the same thing. The bolts are tight. The original starter didn't do this at all.It just needed to be replaced. What could the problem be? John

If I understand your question -
1. Check the teeth on the flywheel (where the starter engages into). Make sure none are chipped
2. Do you still have the old starter? Line it up next to your new one and make sure it matches up
3. I wanna say look into shims, but that is not for your vehicle. But in any case you might call a Ford parts counter and ask.

Good luck

the grinding comes from the starter gear not retracting all the way into the starter housing the new motor was also made by a different mfg that the oem, you`ll need a shim washer between the starter and the mounting flanges.

Did you check the teeth on the ring gear? The starter teeth engage the teeth on the flywheel ring gear. to inspect them, disconnect the battery, remove the inspection cover, slowly rotate the engine while closely inspecting the teeth on the ring gear. If it is an automatic trans also make sure the flexplate to torque converter bolt are tight.

Starter is not fully disengaging. Am surprised the ring gear is not damaged. I f installed properly the only other thing would be the starter switch is leaking juice to the starter solenoid.

you cant shim a ford starter, your nose cone on the starter might be differant than the one the book calls for.I have had this happen before, ford likes to make alot of mid year changes on thier parts so you might have to go buy the production date.the date is on your drivers door well.
