I signed a lease I couldnt remember exactly what I signed, so I asked my landlord to send me a copy and when I got it I noticed there was white out on it to change the date. You can actually feel the white out on the copy. Does this void out the lease? The end of lease date is longer then I thought. I live in Massachusetts I dont know if the laws are different in other states.

I didnt get a copy of my lease when I signed it. I asked my landlord for a copy of it, and when I got it he had put white out on the date it expires. I guess he didnt think I would notice it, you can actually feel the white out. I rented it on Sept 9 and thought it expired on July 8, but the date was changed to June 30. What should I do? I live in Massachusetts. Do I even have any rights?

Most of the time the lease goes til the end of the month... you said you moved in on Sept. 9 and you signed a 12 month lease it should end on Sept. 30. But lets just say you moved in on Sept. 1st the lease would end on Aug. 30.

However if there was a mistake on the lease then you would need to be notified at the time of the lease signing. You would need to initial and so would the landlord. otherwise it is NOT legal for him to change it without your knowledge and agreement.

Do you have a copy of the original lease? You're supposed to have one. If so, you're in good shape. But if not, then I suggest you get legal representation asap. Tell them the situation. I don't know why he changed the date in the lease, but it may be a good idea for you to find out. It could cause major problems later. Call the housing authourity in your state and see what they have to say. You said the end of the lease date is longer than you thought, are you trying to move out of there and go somewhere else? If so, he may be trying to say that you are in violation of your lease and charge a huge amount for breaking your lease. If you can get a hold of your copy, it would be really helpful if you have to go up against him in court, otherwise it's simply his word and lease against your word and no lease. Hope I was helpful.

Any changes to your lease would have to be initialed by you. Since it was not, it's void. Keep hounding the landlord for an original copy.

yes, if they didnt give you a copy of the lease with your initials on the correction then you have a problem. go to the rental housing authority and get an attorney.

If its a copy, how can you possibly feel the white out? Ask to see the original (the only thing permissable in court )and see if there is white out on it.

Try really hard to dig out your original copy and see if he changed it.
