There is not properly a smartest animal. We have not a contest with animal. Each one has a different characteristic and is smart in its conditions. Cat, snakes, birds(parrot can learn words and sentences), fishes... As animal we are the smartest in the Earth.

Cetaceans and Elephants

I hope you are aware that in not including monkeys you eliminate all primates including Homo Sapiens. Also you will have a division between the evolutionists and the Intelligent creation people.

I would say Homo sapien sapien, but if u mean like animals not including us, i would say primates thats not monkeys such as chimpanzee and gorrillas (they can speak in sign language, if u dont believe me...look it up! lol) or the dophins.....<_<". But im not sure....however...i think the neanderthals had a larger brain, and since they are seriously close to us on the evolution scale, since they look 99 percent human....they might be smarter.....not sure though....

A fact it's a PIG, don't understand it, they certainly don't appear intelligent to me. I have read where the elephant is the next animal in line of intelligence. I think a Dolphin is the single most intelligent life, other than humans. Thanks for the opportunity to give this question a shot.

Cats and horses. I say this because they are only trained if they wish to be trained (just like people) and they have mental disorders that are common ONLY in the highest level animals, including obsessive compulsive disorder and Tourette's syndrome.

Also, it has been proven that dolphins have individual names. I think that would be indicative of very high intelligence.

If I wanted to be a complete pain, I'd say the ape.... monkey/ape are two different things! However, I believe it might be dolphins after apes... I think!
