I begining to start building my first computer and I'm not sure what size power supply to use. It will be used for everything from homework to gaming. RIght now Im kind of planning on the following components:

GIGABYTE GA-965P-DQ6 motherboard
Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 Conroe 2.4GHz
Update Crucial Technology 2GB (2 x 1GB) DDR2 SDRAM
320 GB Seagate SATA HD (maybe 2)
BIOSTAR GeForce 7600GS 512MB GDDR2 PCI Express x16 Video Card

Will 500W be enough? What about if I add more cooling and overclock?

That should be more than enough wattage.

However, do not skimp on the power supply. A blown PSU can damage your entire machine or a cheap PSU can cause instability when overclocking. It's one the areas that's very important not to buy the cheapest part available. Buy a name brand like Antec, Enermax, OCZ, Cooler Master.

Also amperage per rail is also an important stat to consider. The specs should listed on the box. Compare them and the higher the better.

Yes 500 should be plenty, I just got a new system myself and have the E6600 its a wise choice. I got a Enermax Liberty ELT500AWT, 1gb Corsair ram, an ATI all in wonder X1900. 256mb.

The Enermax I got has a big fan on the bottom therefore it does not have to spin as fast, which means quiet.(It spins at about 932rpm) Also have a ThermalTake case fan.

It will be, if it is a good PSU. I prefer Antec myself, but there are other great brands as well. Dont skimp out on your PSU, it is one of the most important parts on your PC.

Oh and by the way, there is no point in getting a 7600 with 512 MB of ram. The video card is not powerful enough to support textures that large. It will just be wasted money. Get a 256MB version and you will be fine.

500 should be fine but I SERIOUSLY question your other hardware choices.

Go with an Asus board, better quality than Gigabyte for about $3 more.

Crucial RAM is some of the worst. Go with Kingston for hte same $ or upgrade to Corsair for a few bucks more.

Hitachi/IBM for hard drive.

MSI or Asus for video card, they run lower temps and higher frame rates.

More than sufficient based on the hardware
