while i will admit that the monsters from the movie "Alien" were scary... i mean, they would use us as food and incubators for their young... no one want's to be livestock... but i digress.
in my opinion, the scariest monster of all time... is a pod.
the Pods from "invasion of the body snatchers" are the true scary beings...
you couldn't sleep, because that is when they took over. you couldn't completely trust anyone you saw because they could be a pod person, which would mean that you couldn't trust anyone new. if humanity couldn't come together to face this threat, then they could get us one by one... and it could be anyone since they could mimic anyone perfectly... your mother... the police... they knew everything the others knew... and no one would believe you... no matter what you did, they would think YOU were the crazy one.
how would you feel... if you were trying to prevent the extinction of the whole human race... and you were powerless to stop it? if the resources were available, but no one would help you because your story was too unbelievable?
i think that's why the john romero zombie movies were so creepy... what if the whole world was filled with zombies? it's not like you could prevent people from dieing. it would be a never ending war against everyone who had ever lived... and one bite... one scratch... and you would become a mindless dead thing like them.
i mean, truly imagine it... coming home and you mom... you spouse... you brother or sister... as some being that has all the memories but none of the emotions... and they want to get rid of everything that makes you human... to replace you... to kill you... *shudder*

The clown from IT was scary until the end when the story lost the plot completely. So for total fear it was to be the Alien. It looks so sleek and so deadly efficient.
The scariest movie has to be the original version of the Haunting because there was no monster. Its all left to your imagination which in my case is entirely too vivid.

Leatherface from Texas Chain Saw Masacre. Especially the original movie. Just because he was a one track minded killer. A lot of his mannerisms and act were based on the real life serial killer Ed Geen from Minnesota.
Jason from Friday the 13th movies would come in 2nd.
And the Husband and wife from Motel Hell would be 3rd.
