The easiest and most cost effective way to treat this problem by yourself is to go buy a bag of water softner pellets -- they are salt pellets used in water softners. About twice a month during the growing season, once a month the rest of the year, flush about 1 cup of the pellets down your toliet. The salt in the pellets help to kill back the little roots trying to grow into your sewer line. I was given this advice by a plumber many years ago and I haven't had a problem with tree roots again.

I had a friend that this happened to. They came to his house but they had to cut all the roots surrounding the pipes and had to replace the pipes too as the roots did some major damage. This will be your best bet in the long run. You can try chemicals to kill the roots but if it's a tree, the roots may come back and you'll have to go through it over again.

I have heard of rock salt working, but never tried it. It appears you have a main sewer made from clay. Fortunately, this stops a few feet from your house, and the rest is cast iron. The most common sewer machines, are Ridgid, General, Speedway, and I think there is one called Marco. I wouldn't recommend a homeowner renting a machine. Especially, since you know it is roots. Someone who does not know how to run one can get seriously hurt!!

A plumber told me that flushing Rock Salt (the kind used to make ice cream) down the toilet couple times a month will help keep root growth down. That is a cup or two twice a month.
Home Depot/Lowe's also sells a root killer type product.

You can rent a snake with a rotating blade at Home Depot. The blade will cut whatever is in there. taking out the tree might not be a bad idea, unless you like the tree, of course.

Any good hardware store/home center can recommend a product that you pour down the drain periodically to kill tree roots.
