Two weeks ago I was given a distriburtorship of a novel roof coating product. My commision was to be 8% at contractors price level.I landed a BIG fish to whom I did not have the knowledge or experience to close the sale. The manufacture stepped in and closed a 3M deal.I was told that my new position was that of a manufacture rep and my commission is to be 4%.The price of the product sold was less than distributor price.What is a manufacture rep.I am new to sales and need to find out were I stand.

It sounds fishy to me. I know some companies will give you a different commission depending on wither you found the customer through cold calls and contacts, or wither the company supplied the customer.

Since you brought the customer and did most the work, you should get your usual commission. If someone else did most the work, then they should get some of the commission even if you brought the guy in. Anytime you are ripped off a commission and it is justified by giving you a new title, then your not working for honorable men. Having a distributorship and being a sales rep for the manufacturer are two different things. Were contracts signed and what was in writing? A distributorship would mean you get a piece of the action in your area of responsibility. A sales rep means you get a much smaller piece of the action and the guy with the distributorship gets a piece of your action. It sounds to me they underestimated the value of the area you were in and since you had a big sale, now they want to renege on the deal.

Selling to contractor and retailor are two differnt things. Products are sold for a lower price to distributors because they need to then make a profit to sell them. It is better for you to sell to distributors because if the product does well the retailor will purchase more and more and you will have a continued income and they will also buy a lot more than any contractor (just don't forget to stay in contact with them, take them to luch in a month or so). So, it is normal you would get less commisson for selling to distributor. (If I understand your situation right, you were promoted not demoted.)

What is 4% of a dollar? That is what they are trying to pay you for commission. Not only did they demote you, but drastically cheating you out of money.
