You will have to find the lotion or spray that works best for YOUR skin. I was recommended many lotions, but some of them turn orangey-yellow on my skin while they worked great for other people.

The ones than I like so far:
1) self-tanning spray by Estee Lauder (I have to apply 5-7 layers of it, this is where it gets to be pricey )
2) SUN spray by SUN laboratories. This one is a bit tricky to apply, but 2 coats get me seriously brown ;-) You will need help tanning your back, even if you say you can reach your back with your arms just fine. You need to be standing still while applying it.
3) Neutrogena self-tanning foam. The problem with it it makes my costumes yellow if they are light-colored.

I tried "pro-tan" (expensive). It is possible that I'm not using it right, but I never managed to get good results with it.
