You can if you want to, but you do not need too. Women used to be told to breastfeed from each breast for ten to twenty minutes each side. But they have recently changed that. I had a baby last Monday and due to numerous problems breastfeeding my first I now have two lactation consultants this time around. They now recommend that you have your baby empty one breast completely then if they are still hungry have them try the other one. The reason for this is that the first milk that empties from your breast is very liquid and its purpose is to keep the baby hydrated. Then your breasts release hind milk which contains more nutrients and fats. The hind milk is better for the baby for obvious reasons. My consultants actually have me feed from only one breast at a time and simply alternate each feeding. If you want to store up milk you can pump one while the baby feeds from the other. Good luck breastfeeding and congrats on the baby.

No....if you pump you'll just be telling your body to keep making that milk. Don't pump unless you need to relieve your own discomfort. Let baby feed and set the pace for your body to know how much milk to make. Alternate breasts with each feeding. If she fed on the right at 3:00, when she nurses again at 6:00 (or whatever) then feed her on the left side.

I alternated with my daughter. But when my supply started to get low I had to pump the other side after each feeding.

Your body will tell you if you're getting low, the let down will be short lived and the baby will fuss after a feeding because they are still hungry.
If your milk gets low try drinking 16 oz of soy milk a day, it is loaded with protein, calories and carbs - everything your body needs to produce milk. Also pump regularly, and you can drink "Mothers Milk" tea to stimulate lactation, and drink at least 10 glasses of water a day.
congratulations on the baby!

If you want to pump everytime then you're body will keep on producing. If she's happy and content nursing on one side, then your body will adjust. If you think she's nursing often you will have to make the effort to keep her awake. You didn't specify how young your baby is. But for the first month or so I had to undress my son to feed, then changed his diaper and redressed him to wake him up some so he would feed from the other side.
Good Luck and Congrats.

Not neccessarily just make sure that at the next feeding that you start her on that breast first. If it starts to become engorged or uncomfortable, then you should break out the pump.

Only pump if it becomes engorged and sore, otherwise start with the unused breast at the next feed.

no just alternate feedings, if you use a hair tie, this will help you remember whitch side to feed on next time. she will eventually start to feed on both sides, but being so young it is hard to stay awake that long. Just feed her what she will eat and save the rest for next time.

Alternate breasts when feeding - start with one not fed from last time. Try and make sure she empties a breast as it's the hindmilk with all the nutrients and filling parts in.

No. You can to have spare milk BUT your breast wont explode. It may over produce until it works out baby's feeding habits and adjusts milk production accordingly.

Hope that helps. If it starts hurting, you may want to empty it to relieve pressure.
