If you appreciate the service, (bringing your food to your car and not a drive-thru window is a service) you should be willing to tip. You don't HAVE TO tip, but let's face it, tipping may help to recognize and encourage good service. Often, I just round up or wave back the change. Even 10 percent is better tahn a sharp stick in the eye.

yes. I worked at a sonic for over a year. I made $3 per hour and relied on others to tip and over half of customers did not at all. And honestly it's a slap in the face to tip less than a dollar unless you had come by during happy hour to just get a drink or two. Average tip was between 2-3 dollars and it was amazing just to get $5. Best tip I ever made was $20 and she had said "pay it forward"

I have more often than not NOT tipped them, they dont make a whole lot of money in tips per day and I can guarantee that they dont count on it to support their families. If you get exceptional service, a friendly carhop or fast delivery then you should tip and tip well. Otherwise I wouldnt feel bad about it, its not necessary. Heres some rules of thumb about tipping: Tip These people: Waiters-15-20% Hair dressers-10% Baristas (The girl who makes your coffee at starbucks)use your judgment, if you order something really complicated, throw in more but generally 50 cents is good. Valets a dollar or so Any person who carts your luggage (be it in a hotel or airport)- A dollar or so Hosts/hostesess- you dont have to tip them but if they give you a really good table i would. Cab drivers- 10% The general idea is that if someone provides you a service you tip them. These people dont make a whole lot of money and your tips make up for that gap. I make about 20 dollars a day in tips at starbucks and they are split between 7 other people! So thats 140 dollars that people give into the tip jar per 8 hour period. I have to laugh if someone orders something that is ridiculously complicated and they throw in 2 pennies REALLY hard so it makes a lot of noise ROFL Thats all I can think of for now.

No, don't tip, but I hear what you are saying. I usually face this dilema at Mexican places that aren't quite restaraunts--you go to a counter to order, they bring your food, and bus your table, but no one seats you, takes your order, or refills your drinks. I used to leave a buck at places like this, but I'm not sure if that is just insulting.
After a while, I noticed that tip jars are bad luck. Any time I use one, my order is messed up. If it seems tipping is appropriate, I'll hand someone the tip.

My best friend in high school work at the local Sonic for three years. She said she was paid wait staff minimum wage, just like in a ‘real’ restaurant. So I guess you are expected to tip. I always do but that’s just how I was raised.

I was told that waitresses/waiters at Sonic are paid the same way that other waitresses/waiters are at any other restaurant. Which means that they are paid lower than minimum wage and rely on tips to make a living. However, I do not know if that is true or not.
I just can't make myself tip at Sonic.

I always tip a Sonic waitress between $.50 and a dollar. I'm astounded that some cheapskates don't.
