Do you think a women who has a child born with FAS should be allowed to keep her child?
I, personally, don't think so. I'm doing my senior paper in school, and I'm doing it on FAS. I was going to use that as my thesis statement, but I can't find any webistes or anything that could be helpful with determing that.
I would really like some opinions, and if anyone has any websites that would be helpful, could you share them, please. I should mention that they can't be ".com" sites. Thanks for any help.

Generalisation is a very dangerous thing. Yes the woman is to blame for her child's FAS but by the time she gives birth she could be reformed and no longer drinking. Personally I think unless the mother is a serious risk to her baby's health she should be at least given a chance but with very intensive supervision.

It depends on your views of alcoholism. For people who think it's a disease there would be disagreement that the woman willingly drank when she knew it would hurt her baby. Most alcoholics truly do not believe they have a choice - alcohol owns them, and they'll risk losing everything before losing it.
I think that in the case of FAS, once the damage has been done, it's done, and changing custody of the child isn't going to change that. The birth mom should be held accountable by court order to get treatment, and if she continues to drink and endanger her child after it's born then yes, the right to raise her child should be suspended or taken. But she should at least be given a chance to change her ways.
If she succeeds, in the long run it will be better for her FAS baby than if that child is put into foster care or a group home. FAS babies grow to have behavioral problems and disabilities, and are less likely to get adpoted.

nope one glass of wine won't have harmed the baby at all. there are a lot of women who drink while pregnant before they even know they are. my sister got completely trashed 2 weekends in a row before she found out she was pregnant but of course after finding out she didn't drink anymore AT ALL until after the baby was born. the little one was 100% fine...just had a slightly low birth weight (5lbs 14oz). That apparently isn't a big deal now that we think of it though. She is now a year old & can still wear much smaller clothes but according to the doctor she's the correct weight for her age, it's just that she's petite like her mommy was when she was little. Btw, if you smoke I would quit! Do NOT quit cold turkey cause that can actually harm the baby.....just slow down until you quit. A friend of mine smoked quite a bit (menthol too!) during her pregnancy & that ended up disasterous. The baby had to stay in the hospital for a little while because she wouldn't stop crying & tests had confirmed that she was majorly suffering from nicotine withdrawl. That poor little one :-(

If a child is born with FAS the state steps in and takes the child and places it into foster care. It is then up to the state / courts / councelors...etc on what happens to the child...adoption / reunification...etc. Call you local Health and Human Services and see if you can speak with a Case Worker.

I dont know that I agree with that, because yu can give up drinking when you find out that you are pregnant, but the baby can already be affected. Its a bit of a grey area I think, because while they could have given up they may not have, so it really depends on the individual case

Sorry, I don't know of any sites. But I agree with you. She should not be allowed to keep her child. She willingly drank alcohol while she was pregnant. To me that sounds like a form of child abuse. What kind of parent would someone like that make?
