Disclaimer: Anyone who voted for George W Bush in the 2004 election should immediately schedule a meeting with the psychologist nearest you...thank you.
George W. Bush's presidency appears headed for colossal historical disgrace. Barring a cataclysmic event on the order of the terrorist attacks of September 11th, after which the public might rally around the White House once again, there seems to be little the administration can do to avoid being ranked on the lowest tier of U.S. presidents. And that may be the best-case scenario. Many historians are now wondering whether Bush, in fact, will be remembered as the very worst president in all of American history.
From time to time, after hours, I kick back with my colleagues at Princeton to argue idly about which president really was the worst of them all. For years, these perennial debates have largely focused on the same handful of chief executives whom national polls of historians, from across the ideological and political

spectrum, routinely cite as the bottom of the presidential barrel. Was the lousiest James Buchanan, who, confronted with Southern secession in 1860, dithered to a degree that, as his most recent biographer has said, probably amounted to disloyalty -- and who handed to his successor, Abraham Lincoln, a nation already torn asunder? Was it Lincoln's successor, Andrew Johnson, who actively sided with former Confederates and undermined Reconstruction? What about the amiably incompetent Warren G. Harding, whose administration was fabulously corrupt? Or, though he has his defenders, Herbert Hoover, who tried some reforms but remained imprisoned in his own outmoded individualist ethic and collapsed under the weight of the stock-market crash of 1929 and the Depression's onset? The younger historians always put in a word for Richard M. Nixon, the only American president forced to resign from office. Now, though, George W. Bush is in serious contention for the title of worst ever.

And all this from a left winger, imagine that. I will concede to this:
George W. Bush is the worst President we have had in the past six years.

I will write more...but I have been wondering the same re: Harding, James Buchanan, Herbert Hoover, and Andrew Johnson. they were definitely at the bottom of the barrel. I don't know how history will look at Bush, but the amount of real cooperation and improvement to our nation in the name of the general public good has been dismal...and i am a former Reagan Democrat.. I was looking at the history of the Dow's ups and downs and you can see where the real gains have been economically...Clinton's era was a definite upward climb, as good as any 8 year period...Bush, on the other hand, although having a slight improvement overall.. has been in charge of the capping of the Dow...you can see that the curve has definitely topped out during the last half of his tenure and the Republicans claim points for a great market...looking at the curve, it looks grim...factor current events and grinding of his war against Islam, i don't see a glorious time for us ahead.

no longer even close. Worst in modern background is Carter. record severe inflation, gas lines, record severe expenses of activity, brought about the Iran/Iraq problem, bought the Panama Canal, hostage disaster etc etc. and that's in basic terms a initiate. Ask every physique who lived throughout that era. below Bush we've been secure considering the fact that 2001 and we've considered the inventory marketplace hit an all time height of 14,000. No president has executed this. i do in comparison to many of the Bush regulations, yet by capacity of staying out of the economic device we observed stunning growth. it incredibly is, till the democrats gained congress. Now the marketplace is somewhat over 8,000. those recent scandals by capacity of senate democrats has incredibly injury the economic device. yet liberals write the background books, so do no longer assume the reality to be common to hit upon.

I think what most people are going on about Jimmy Carter is that he was an honest President. He didn't play party politics while in office. But even the Democrats, his own party, was out to get him. He was probably one of the greatest presidents in history. He was just never given a chance.
But as for Bush...no doubt that he is one of, if not the worst president in history. Look at our economy. Look at how he is "protecting" our country. I wish I wasn't 17 back in 2004, or else Kerry would have had one more vote from an Ohioian.

Though some may not believe he has achieved the status of being worst president ever, he's working on it! He's still got two more years to get there! Scary, huh?

Jimmy Carter wasn't really bad: his total inaction in the face of danger probably prevented a war.
However, Nixon and Bush are just about tied in my opinion.

my vote is Harding for number 2 slot, Tricky Dick for three. as for number one, perhaps i'm biased by the times, but i gotta go with Dubya.
one wonders though, if the Dems do sweep next week, will they have the cajones to begin a criminal investigation and bring criminal charges?
