As a 35 year old man - probably your dad's age - I can tell you he will not be heartbroken if you tell him you do not want to play basketball. If he is like most of the Fathers I know, he would rather have you tell him you'd prefer not to play than to find out after a year or two that you were only playing to make him happy.

Hearing that you were only trying to please him would more likely break his heart, because he would feel that he made you unhappy for no reason.

I swear - it isn't that important to him. If this was a story about him being pushy to play basketball and "win win win" like some sports dads, I'd say something different. You're okay telling him you don't want to play, and more importantly, why.

Good luck!

Well I'm 6'4 and a guy and EVERYONE tells me I should play basketball because of my height but when it comes down to it I just don't like the sport. I don't really mind playing with my friends or something but I hate being on the school team (I did join up for a week or 2 of practices and then I decided it wasn't for me.)

I'd say you could try it if you want, but don't play the sport if you don't like it.

I agree with the first answer, that you need to live for yourself. Your dad will love you either way.
I would advise that you give it a try though. I didn't play in high school and now I regret it in a way.

Don't play basketball to make him happy. You have a mind of your own~use it. Stick with diving & dance.

"my dad wants me to play basketball but i cant stand it"

You know your dad only wants you to do what you want as long as it is reponsible.
