can he still live for a long time..He is only 49..
What does this do for him--Is it really serious?

a lot of people have them, it can be serious, but your dad can live a long enjoyable life, he just needs to heed his doctors advice, like quitting smoking.....eating healthy... I also think he has to be careful around some electronics too..... talk to your dad... ask him questions

A pacemaker makes sure your father's heart rate will not go below a certain rate.
Not knowing his full heart history, one cannot say how serious his case is, but many people live a long life, even with a pacemaker.

It will help him!!! You should just look at it like it's a great thing to live in this day & age, as we have technology that can prolong lives that could otherwise not continue. It regulates his heart, and will help him live a "normal" life. My grandpa has had a pacemaker for many, many years, and it has helped him tremendously.
Just remember that life is short, and to let those around you know how much you love them all the time!!!!!!

your dad is young, he should make a good recovery especially if he has a healthy lifestyle . the pacemaker will help his heart keep regular with pushing the blood out and expanding the arteries (you'll be able to feel it under his skin) all surgeries are serious but as long as he keeps his Dr's appointments and follows his advice he should be fine

A pacemaker regulates his heart rate. Yes its a good thing he can still live a long time. I have seen many many patients with pacemakers and they do very well with them.

All a pace maker does is make sure that your heart 'fires' in the right sequence and keeps on 'ticking'. You could say that it is serious because they don't just put them in for practice. He may have some restrictions on what he can physically do and eat, but having one doesn't shorten ones life. He'll just have to have the batteries replaced some point along the way.

Well, its good that he got one if needs it. That should be some comfort to you. Because, if his heart potentially needs regulating then he could have been much worse off without it. I don't know any reason why he wouldn't have a reasonably similar lifespan... There's never any guarantees with time, though, (for anyone) so just love your dad and be happy that he's identifying medical needs he has before they create too much of a problem for him.

Not necessarily. He just needs help with his heart. My grandma got one about 15 years ago, and she's still going strong.
