i'm just curious as to why people think this book should be banned. what exactly is your reasoning for why kids should not be allowed to read it in schools?

It should not be banned, despite the fact that it contains certain racially offensive elements. We can not deny our history as a country, and banning books is equivalent to pretending that what happened never occurred. It is like denying the holocaust.

It is on the banned list because of some racial slurs, but I do NOT think it should be banned.

With all the stupid reasons people find to ban books, I'm surprised the Bible hasn't been banned yet from store shelves.

No books should ever be banned. No one has the right to tell anyone else what they cannot read. If a parent does not want their child to read a book, they have the right to raise them as they see fit, but they do not have the right to say other children cannot read that book if they and their parents have no problem with it.

Huckleberry Finn is every teachers nightmare. He cusses, smokes, drinks, skips school, runs away, hangs out with the
"bad" crowd, sneaks out at night, defies authority, & doesn't want to work....but its a great book.
Forget the racial reference, its but a minor part of the book,
people/teachers dislike having to explain how all the things Huck
does are wrong, but makes them seem like such fun things to do. They worry that kids are going to read the book and will
try to copy him & his adventures.
Mark Twain didn't write the book for kids, he wrote them for adults
but kids discovered them & they have become a classic part of
American literature.

No reasonable, free and intelligent society tolerates the banning of ANY book, however much at odds it is with 'local sensibilities'. People that call for the banning or censorship of anything deserve all the discomfort they inevitably cause themselves.

the reason it is banned is because of the name of the main character "****** jim". people get clouded in the whole thing and don't realize he is more the protagonist of the book than huck is. his character is strong and wise even though he is a run away slave. you really have people on both sides wanting to ban it -- for the use of the bad word and the fact a "stupid" slave shouldn't be the protagonist. its a tiresome argument nobody will win and in the end everyone loses because the actual issues are completely clouded over.
