I am planning on formula feeding my newborn and was wondering how I would know what formula to buy. Do they test out formulas on the babies at the hospital to see what they can tolerate?

They'll give you a "free sample" at the hospital and probably at your doc's office. Just keep in mind that it's not really free, you pay for it in the increased prices of the stuff on the shelves once they get you hooked in. Breastmilk is so much healthier and FREE. I'd encourage you to at least TRY to nurse for the first couple of weeks before deciding if you want to bottlefeed instead. It's a lot easier to switch from breast to bottle than from bottle back to breast. The immunities in the colostrum are SO important and work as baby's first immunization.

No they don't it's all you mommy... Sometimes they send free samples home. I would try Nestle Good Start, or something that says specifically for 0-3 months. Don't flip flop between formulas, if you're baby doesn't spit up, doesn't have severe gas, stick with the formula.

I didn't particularlly like Breast feeding, but all medical studies show that breast milk is best at least for the first 8 weeks. It increases the mom-baby connection as wells as reduces the risk of illness as they are getting some of their defense from the immunities you've already built.

MOST IMPORTANTLY, talk to your OBGYN and pediatrician. They will also have tips on how to help you with the breast milk that's going to come in no matter what.

Yea they do test different formulas to see which one works best for your baby. When we brought my son home from the hospital the hospital did give us a little formula to take home with us. I wouldn't recommend buying any formula until you know what kind your baby is going to get.

Usually the nurse or doctor will tell you what formula your baby is being fed in the hospital, the most common is simple Similac plus Iron...They are not likely to send you home with any, maybe a small sampling, like two 4 oz bottles worth, so it will be important to have some ready for baby when you get home... Good Luck with the baby and congrats!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Nope, they do not test your baby to see which formula to use. The usually have a default brand they use. Depends on the hospital, the may give you a little gift bag with some sample formula. That's about it.

They will give the baby what kind of formula it needs and no one really knows what kind until the baby is born because if the baby is a premie then they would give the baby a kind of formula that has more fat and nutrients and viatemins. Otherwise I think they give it like liptamil or something.

Yes they usually do. The hospital sent my baby home on Enfamil Lipil; but as I got home I realized all she did was cry. So my peditrician switched me to the Enfamil GentleEase which is a formula with most of the irons and other vitamns already broken down.

The nurse will ask what type of formula you want. Ask for what brands they offer and you'll need to choose. They will give you a few bottles to take home with you. They won't last you longer than the day so you'll need to purchase some more formula for home very soon.

I wouldn't buy anything until I went home because her formula was changed while she was there due to a lactose intolerance which ofcourse you won't find out til you get there. Plus they do send you home with a box of premade formula which is 6 3 oz bottles.
