If an adult and a minor get in a dispute, and it turns physical, can the minor be charged with assault?

A minor is capable of committing assault and may be charged for it.

Viakin's answer saying it depends on who starts it is not necessarily true. Even if somebody hits you and you hit them back, you may still be charged with assault. You are only allowed to react in genuine self defence, with proportional force.

assault is based on who hit first. But one would hope that an "adult" would be able to better control the situation.
