I remember seeing the side of a mountain being blown up that had sculptures in it. I think this was the year 2002 / 03

I have read what you are talking about, Kurdish militia blowing up mountains for recreation--unsympathetic to the Assyrian reliefs since they are not Kurdish. But I am unsure of the specific year, sorry.

Jefrfrey S is correct. The 2 giant Bamiyan Buddhas (120 and 175 feet tall), carved during the Gandharan period, were blown up in 2001 by the Afghan Taliban who claimed the statues were graven idols. The continuing religious and military strife thoughout the Middle East and Central Asia have resulted in the destruction of countless invaluable archaeological sites such as these.

I think you're actually referring to the giant statues of the Buddha, dating to the Fifth or Sixth Centuries AD, that were carved into the side of a mountain in the Bamiyan valley of Afghanistan. They were blown up by the Taliban in 2001. This incident received quite a bit of media attention at the time.

I thought that was the Taliban's doing in Afghanistan, but maybe someone here will have a link on the story.
