Assuming you're talking about the "stuck in Iraq" speech: it was at a rally at Pasadena City College for California gubnatorial candidate Phil Angelides. Being at a college, I presume that the audience was largely composed of students. I can't find a full transcript or video of the speech, though.

“My statement yesterday - and the White House knows this full well - was a botched joke about the president and the president’s people, not about the troops,” Kerry told reporters.
During a campaign rally in Pasadena, California, ahead of the November 7 congressional elections, Kerry was making comments Monday on the importance of education when, according to a spokesman, he misspoke while trying to make fun of Bush.
“You know, education, if you make the most of it, you study hard, you do your homework and you make an effort to be smart, you can do well. If you don’t, you get stuck in Iraq,” Kerry said. Kerry had had opened his speech at Pasadena City College with several one-liners, joking at one point that Bush had lived in Texas but now "lives in a state of denial."
He tried to make a joke, albeit a clumsy one. Good grief, it was hard to find much but headlines screaming Kerry says troops are stupid!
He was simply saying, those with college are less likely to go to war. That's a fact. According to a report from the Office of Army Demographics, less than 5% of the enlisted troops have BA or BS degrees, and barely 7% have any college experience. College degrees are found almost exclusively amongst the officer corps.
I find it amusing that those "defending" the troops the loudest, in fact never served in the armed services-like John Kerry did. And very, very sad that those who have served honorably defend those who stayed out of the service, especially Vietnam, and attack those who did-like John Kerry-because of partisan politics.

It was in no way being critical of Bush.. he directly slammed the troops in Iraq as being uneducated. Nice try on the spin, but Scary Kerry stepped in some doo-doo.
He said “You know, education, if you make the most of it, if you study hard and you do your homework, and you make an effort to be smart, uh, you, you can do well. If you don’t, you get stuck in Iraq.”
At a rally with Phil Angeleides in Cali. He should have his *ss kicked, then he should politely step out of politics.

If he truly was speaking about president Bush than I would have to say that he certainly knows nothing about regular everyday American people. He should have specified that he was speaking about the world he lives in not the world we live. My son is a disabled vet from Iraq. I was very offended by his remarks. Now he says if I was offended than I am crazy. You are correct over you have to look at who he was speaking to. I think he's lying. again.

He made "bush is an idiot" jokes in his opening remarks. This is nothing but an inkblot test. Conservatives hear that he is making fun of troops because that is how they think, and they don't really get that the uneducated people who have gotten us stuck in Iraq are THE REPUBLICANS THEMSELVES.

The VAST majority of our soldiers, not officers, are young, minority, inner city youth, who could not afford to go to college. They may get some education when they are in, because liberals have long supported educating our soldiers.

Both Kerry and Gore talk randomly to no one in particular quite often. Many times no one's even in the room. Gore has been overheard just mumbling, "those crazy jews in Florida", s' sad.
