you just add the like or same values. In your first example

7a + a

since both are multiples of a, you simply add

7a + a = 8a

The second example:

m + 3m + 8

after adding the like elements

4m + 8

no more simplification can be done.

7a + a is 8a because when a variable (a in this equation's case) has no number that means it is equal to 1. So 1a and 7a are similar and you can add them together.

Hence, 8a

m + 3m + 8 is 4m + 8 for the same reason. The variable "m" is equal to one and can be combined with 3m. That's where the 4m comes from. And the 8 has nothing to be combined with so you just keep that as it is.

7a +(1)a=8a when there is no number in front of a, it means there is one.

1m+3m+8=4m+8 thats as simple as it gets you cannot add unlike terms
