The doctor will tell you that there are several reasons why you shouldn't eat sushi (the raw varieties) during pregnancy.

1. Some fish has high levels of mercury. You should be avoiding high mercury content fish cooked or not.

2. Raw fish can have extraordinarily high amounts of bad bacteria in it that can make you deathly ill and can keep your fetus/baby from gaining the nutritian that he/she needs.

3. The risk of food poisoning. Cross contamination of one type of raw fish that is infected/not stored properly to a fish that is cooked/stored properly may lead to severe food poisoning.

I completely understand your cravings. Before i was pregnant I was eating sushi at least every other week. I have only had a California roll... but can't wait until I can have "real" sushi.

I think the people that suggest that you don't have sushi when you are pregnant are the ones that never really had a strong craving for sushi. I have eaten sushi before, maybe once every 2 months, and it has to be because my date wants sushi. Maybe they feel that if you eat a lot of sushi, your baby will look Asian. :) If you want it, try it. If it does not agree with you, then I don't have to suggest that you don't try it again. Only you really know what you want and can tolerate. Sushi is easier to digest than most foods, so chances are it is a lot better for you than a hamburger or ice cream.

I had sushi during my first pregnancy before I knew I wasn't supposed to and my daughter turned out fine. You can have vegetarian sushi, cooked fish sushi, and ask your ob/gyn if it's ok for you to have regular sushi once in a while. The main concern that I've read is food poisoning leading to dehydration and as long as you go to a decent restaurant that usually isn't an issue.

It's really not a good idea to eat raw fish while pregnant. But I cheated and had "sushi" but ONLY california rolls or the ones that had the cooked crab or shrimp. I got the flavor (and wasabi) without worrying about the raw fish aspect.

Enjoy! YUM!!!

Very bad idea, because of the risk of fetal death from food poisioning. Pregnant women and their fetuses are particularly vulnerable to food poisoning, and raw fish is very iffy at best because of bacteria. Also there is mercury in the seafood that can damage your baby's developing brain.

But you could get the vegetarian sushi (like avocado and cucumber rolls) which are perfectly safe. With the ginger and wasabi, you'll never miss the fish! Yum!

Avoid raw fish. Have speciality shop do your sushi with parboiled fish or cooked shrimp or crab. If they do it rightm you will never know.

I ate sushi during both my pregnancies and everything is fine. I did not however eat raw fish, I had california rolls, grilled veggie rolls, cucumber rolls, avacado rolls, steamed shrimp and grilled salmon. Philadelphia rolls.....all good. :)

Raw fish is not good as I believe it can contain liver fluke. Best steer clear of it!

you should avoid many of the fish dishes they come up with while pregnant. the reason is cause there is tons of mercury in the fish, and that can cause miscarrage.

try some california rolls, with no raw fish. If that doesnt cut it you just have to go with out. JUst remind yourself that you are doing whats best for your baby!
