Is this a place where you can make friends or just a popularity contest? I've seen people who have over 100 friends and I really don't think this person would consider at least ten of them as real friends. I think this website is more about how many acquaintances you know, rather than how many real friends you have.

I think my space is a good place to meet people but I totally agree that a lot of people use if for as you say a popularity contest.
I personally use it to have fun and keep contact with family and friends. There are a \lot of Interesting people that try to add me though...lol.
It's a strange place in some ways but welcome to the would of cyber...lol

i've been on myspace for about a year now, and i have 163 on my friends list. over 100 of them are actually people i know, from family, high school, college, ect. i've had a lot of people i've been close with throughout my life, and though we're not that close anymore, it's a nice and easy way to keep up with people. the others on my friends list are artists, writers, musicians, photographers, and various activist groups, with the acception of about 5 people i met through myspace. true, there's a few parts of myspace that are really lame, especially those stupid chain bulletins. but for me, it's not a pissing contest to see how many friends you have, it's a form of communication and entertainment.

Depends on who you are talking about. Most 15 year old kids on there use it as a popularity contest. On the other hand, I'm 26 years old, in a steady relationship, and have people on there from high school, work, current friends... etc. It's a great way to keep in touch with them and see what's going on in their lives. I think it's a great tool when used properly.

Personally, I love myspace. Its a great place to go talk to your friends and meet new people. but to talk to them, they dont have to be on your friends list. For example, i have 27 friends, and i talk to alot more than that, but the 27 on my list, are actually my friends, not just people i dont know and i add as a friend. the people with all those friends have insecurities, they think they need to look popular with all those friends.

im on myspace and yes it is true i dont know most of the people on there but i really dont care how many friends i have on there but i dont reject people unless they are creepy looking or really old i mean i am 21 and a female so lots of people do write me that r weird but i just get on there 2 talk 2 friends back home and relatives that i dont get to see much!!!!!!

For some people it's a popularity contest, for others it's just for fun.
My sister says it's a cult.

yeah its true what you say about popularity contest but like many people like me we have it to keep in touch with friends that we don't see every day and that live far...but i do think people use it for the wrong things like looking at younger people pages and puting up things that they should not.

its great to meet people and talk with someone, but as friends nah... its just to meet new people in your area or in other areas...I like it... I mean you can find a true friend or you can find someone to talk to... its fun... and as for popularity... i have 69 friends and i post and talk to most of em... others that i dont talk to just have the page cus i see em all the time.. and so we added each other... but i have seen those peeps with like 456 friends.. lol silly

well i have 167 friends but i know them all from my school and we're really good friends and thats just another way to keep in touch since we dont alwayz see each other at school u know..but i also have some friends that added me and i dont know them but i like to get to know more people from around the world especially if they wanted to add me!!lol
