Before I resort to removing and cleaning my carbs does anyone know of a decent Carb Cleaning compound that I can just drop into a full tank of petrol. Preferably something that you KNOW to work. I've tried Redex - no good.

Using fuel additives is not recommended for motorcycles, it will only make your problem worse because it will break loose dirt in the tank that will get clogged in your jets. The low speed jet is very tiny and will get clogged easy if you use a fuel additive to clean with. If your carbs need cleaning don't waste any more time looking for an additive, just remove them and get it over with...It's the only way to get it running right...

The best stuff I have found is Yamaha carb cleaner! I have used this stuff on bikes that have set for ten years ! I used to tear them down to clean them but not any more. This is how you do it. First take off the gas tank, Then drain the carbs using the drain screw under each carb. Then close the drain screws after carbs are drained. Then take a sixty cc syringe if you can find one, or use something similar. Fill the syringe with the carb cleaner, and the stick it into the fuel line that was disconnected from the fuel tanks. Start pushing the cleaner into the fuel line until you get it running out of the over flow line from each carburetor, then stop and let sit for twenty four hours. Then drain the cleaner out from the drain screws, re tighten them and replace the fuel tank. Be sure to put some in line filters on when ever you are done. If the carbs seem to still not be right, repeat process, and I guarantee you this will do the trick. Do not waste your time with that **** that you put in the tank, it may work for some but if the bike has been sitting long enough to turn the fuel,it won't work. So go to your local Yamaha shop and get some, I have been using it for years and it works !

Wynns Carb Cleaner

Wynn's fuel injector cleaner works well. Anything designed to cean fuel injectors will help. Make sure you don't use too much and DON'T GET IT ON ANY PAINTED SURFACES! Put like 1 oz per gas in your tank. Run the bike good and hard after adding the cleaner. This will not work if the bike has sat for years and years, but may work on one that sat for a couple of months.

Funny the Gal is the only one with the correct answer! Way to go kaye!

Nothing will clean your carbs other than manual labor. If you are experiencing poor idle/no idle with out choke, Engine killing when you open your throttle off idle, or popping on deceleration all these point to dirty jets in the carb. If fuel can't get in there to run the bike properly how is a cleaning fluid going to get in there?

Tough job to get the sludge out with additives. You really need to pull them off, break them down, and soak them overnight. Then back together with a new gasket set and reinstall on the bike. Those additives are not that good. I use valvoline carb cleaner for when I pull out a jet or just down the throat but it doesn't really get into the venturies that well although it seems to be a good cleaner for what I mentioned!

yes.... and it's going to sound like i'm full of schitt.... but transmission fluid!!! about 2 oz per gal. pre mix it with gas before you put it in your tank. It'll smoke like a freight train.... but I swear that it works. Cleans carb, and intake/exhause valves. The trans fluid has chemical cleaning additives in it. as it goes through your tank, carb, engine and exhaust... it cleans everything. I've used it on many high mileage vehicles with great results.

Sea Foam is a decent product that seems to work as well as anything I've tried. But nothing will work as well as what you know your going to have to do eventually... taking apart the carbs and soaking them.

Like Nomad said ....
Sea foam.
Best thing out there for bikes.
Wont hurt any plastic or rubber parts of the fuel system, and it stabilizes the fuel 100% better than Stabil.
Check for it at most any bigger named autoparts store.

I use berrymans every now and again as a preventive thing, but if it's bad enough to effect the way it runs, just get it over with and remove it and rebuild.
