if you are formatting your hard drive for a re-install of windows ,then the xp installation will format your drive during set=up
if you want to format your hard drive using a start up disc or a xp ms-dos disc then the ms-dos command to format is format c: (were c is the name of the drive)
you will then be asked again wether you wish to continue,as all data will be lost answer y/n
there is plenty of formtting software on the net,but this is a time when paying for software makes good sense ,as some of the free formatters dont actually clear the drive and data can be easily recovered
if you go to your hard drive manufacturers website ,they also should have a formatting tool which you can readily download to set your drive up
good luck
