the moral is... give me stuff and i won't destroy you.
it's a useful moral that should be taught to kids, as they are more than likely going to be on the receiving end of it for the rest of their lives. work harder or i'll fire you. give us council tax or you'll go to jail. buy these charity christmas cards or we'll... make you feel really guilty.
none of these involve eggs or graffiti but it's the same concept. Bringing you up without it seems to have made you... 'nice'. Sadly, nice doesn't pay.
You should instead teach your parents what mine taught me. Don't go out trick or treating, hide in the house and pretend you're not there when the kids come round, then as they prepare to deface your property, throw waterbombs etc out of upstairs window. They can't climb walls.
p.s. taken in the context of the grand scheme of things, this probably explains why I am considering becoming a politician.

How exactly is that teaching a kid that it is bribing people? All the kid says is trick or treat. They don't stand on the porch and say, well I will tell so and so you did this if you don't give me some candy. It's a day of fun for children a day where they can get as much candy as their bag can fill and just have fun with it. There is nothing like being able to dress up and get candy just because you say 3 words. Kids will egg a house, car, etc and place graffiti all over the place just because they are being bad in behavior not because they didn't or did get candy for Halloween. Yes kids have to learn that they can't always get what they want but Halloween isn't about that. Guess you don't celebrate Christmas with presents either because it would teach you that you would get your way about everything. I see that you were taught this way and can understand why you still think it but that isn't what any holiday is about, especially Halloween.

No, I don't think that Halloween teaches kids bad morals at all. I believe that Halloween is a good thing, a time for entire neighborhoods to come out and have fun.
I still go trick-or-treating, and I love it, even though I'm a teen now. I've never thought of, even as a little kid, throwing a tantrum if someone hands out something I don't like. If anyone does throw a tantrum, perhaps they already have the tendency to do so, and probably are a little kid.
Also, a number of my friends still go trick-or-treating, and I don't think that any of them have ever egged a house or gone off destroying someone's property. I think that if someone did do that, though, they also wouldn't necessarily be out trick-or-treating. Even without Halloween, vandalism happens anyways.
From my perspective, Halloween is a good holiday, even if some people do say that it is all about devil worshiping and stuff like that. Halloween doesn't teach kids bad morals, and is a fun holiday for the whole community to enjoy. Not to mention, it's one of the only holidays out there in which some people actually see their neighbors. (Myself included)
Happy Halloween!

No. That is a parenting issue. Believe me that CHristmas has WAY more kids throwing tantrums and being spoiled selfish brats if they don't get what they want for Christmas.
In my youth, Halloween was about the community getting together and habing a good time. Kids dress up and go to their neighbors homes, they give out candy and say things like "Oh! What a scary ghost. What a pretty little princess."
I was never taught to be upset if I didn't get candy. Actually, had my Dad mentioned that I even could get upset, maybe I would have. I think there should be more fun community type holidays like Halloween.

well you don't have to bribe people. Basically trick or treating is people getting dressed and others giving them candy. People choose to give out candy if they want to.
People who grafetti are wrong though. Halloween is about having fun as neigbors not trashing other's property. Don't let those people ruin your outlook on it. I don't think the holiday teaches kids to be selfish either because its not like they can be rude and ask for more pieces because then the person will say no. Halloweenis a fun holiday and if you ever get the chance, experience it because it's something to look foward to all October,

NO!!!!!
The trick part of Halloween has lost it's weight. If the people do not want to take part in this PURELY FUN holiday, they just have to turn off their lights, have no decorations and be left alone. HALLOWEEN is about COSTUMES, CANDY, and DECORATIONS. People only say "or treat" because of tridition.
Also: Halloween is the old All Hallow's eve, the one day a year people could get all the "bad stuff" out. Now is different
Go trick or treating with a friend and their little kid.
Maybe you are echoing the words of your father without personal expirience, the basis of opinion. You father has his opinion, making him biased. Make your own opinion. It's never too late.

I can see where your dad is coming from and it'ssomething which I rant about over and again on variuous message boards. It's respect.
There is no issue at all with the kids coming around dressed as witches and taking a few lollies. That's part of the fun and hopefully, they will say thank you and it will give them some great memories.
Where there is a problem is the 12+ gang who come around with just their hood up and then look disgusted that you have not given them cash. They are teh ones who will throw eggs and vandalise.
And just as an aside - when I used to go Hallowe'ening, I only stuck to the streets I knew and maybe it's because we all used to speak to our neighbours so much more then - but I also never knocked at the doors of the people who I knew were elderly etc.
As I said - it's all about respect and if you are brought up to understand that - ther is no problem with having a bit of Hallowe'en fun, is there?

What? No! It is once a year and they have to be polite to get the candy. It is just supposed to be a good time. The hooligans of which your father spoke were a bunch of high school age, loser, boys with nothing better to do. These are kids who get into trouble whether it's Halloween or not. I certainly hope you change your mind b/c it is so much fun for kids. And to be totally honest, I always thought that the kids who were weren't allowed to go were majorly weird, as were their parents, when I was a kid. And I even grew up in a Catholic family.

i hear what you're saying, but it's just FUN
At Christmas - children are led to believe that a STRANGER comes into their HOME to deliver presents...weren't we taught not to accept ANYTHING from weirdos? is that not a conflicting situation?
Halloween isn't the only way children learn that they can't have what they want all the time and by participating in the Halloween FUN it doesn't mean that they have been taught the wrong lesson for life as you put it...
it is hypocritical to comment on something if you have not given it a go and are basing your opinions on that of anothers.

your dad apparently has issues and you in turn will also tell yours kids this farce as well. halloween, today, means a time of having fun and getting treats. no kid reflects on the "meaning" of halloween as you do now. you were robbed of a childhood tradition and so was your brother. you think too much in the wrong direction here. egging and vandalizing are what teenagers do, not kids. they do it bcuz they outgrow trick or treating and want some more fun. it's natural. not all kids do it but some will. it's a part of the tradition

i dont think so. its can be scary or spooky but for most kids its about dressing up for fun and getting lots of candy and cavities! just teach them that monsters aren't real and the whole satan thing has nuthing to do with trick or treating. or i u want stay home watch some "safe" halloween movies(no gore or bloodor violence) ex.) corpse bride and make a nice scary dinner together u can get some nice recipes online. make up some halloween games and make up a ghoststory of ur own. halloween doesnt mean u have to trick or treat just a fun idea. and i believe that halloween isnt evil, just maybe a little more mature for adults.
