In magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), it's a number used in diffusion-weighted imaging to distinguish a real ischemia (blood flow inadequacy) from similar image effects of nonrandom water diffusion in the brain due to structures such as cell membranes, myelin sheaths, etc. See the ref.
