David Stern is a business man first and foremost. While most of the players are black and come from an urban culture and heritage, the largest market available to sell his product (basketball games and merchandising) to is white middle class America. Recent research has confirmed that this market group doesn't identify well with the hip-hop culture that is now so prevelent in the NBA. Stern is therefore trying to tne down some of the so called "black" traits and characteristics of players. Right or wrong this is what he is doing.
It does seem wrong, almost traitorous, that he would abandon the culture that has produced nearly all of the current players that have helped to make the NBA as successful s it is today. It will be interesting to see how successful Stern will be and what tactics he will use to acheive his goals.

Finally finally finally a good question. But there is no good answer. I am a huge NBA fan and I'm black, but I thought after Jordan retired the 2nd time the league was lost and didn't have an identity. All we had was AI and a bunch of guys with no respect and poor representatives of the league. Than of course the Detroit vs. Indiana thing made the league look like a bunch of thugs and I think Stern wants to clean it up. I don't really think it's about being too black more than it's about being marketable and gaining more appeal for the game

I don't know about that, but if the NBA is generally perceived as dominated by thugs, pimps, druggies and such (Ron Artest), then they will eventually alienate those who fill the stands and pay the bills.

BECAUSE IT IS WRONG. THE NBA IS A MAJOR SPORT, VIEWED ALL OVER THE WORLD. WITH THE AGE RESTRICTION AND THE DRESS CODE CHANGES IN THE PAST FEW YEARS IS A PERFECT EX. OF TRYING TO KEEP THE BLACK MAN DOWN. U COULD NEVER B TOO BLACK, BLACK IS BEAUTIFUL.
