OK, here is what I would tell anyone in this situation....if your PC is older than 2 years, and the cost of anti virus software, some more RAM is equal to more than $100.....with the time you would need to invest ask yourself...Dude, should I get a dell for $300?

Buy Ad-aware SE Plus (it's like 30 to 40 bucks and it really helps)
and McAfee Virus Protection
that will keep your computer clean for ever and ever!
also
try defragmenting
and deleting unused programs (make sure they are unused, not ones u never heard of)
to defragment
go to My Computer
right click your harddrive (what ever you call it)
go to Properties
go to Tools
2nd one down is Defragment Now...
push it
at the bottom is another button that says
Defragment
push that
pending on your computer speed and how much crap you have in the harddrive
it will take anywhere between 5 minutes and 24 hours +
=)
good luck
if you have a slow/ old computer
you might be better off getting a new computer

Spybot - Search & Destroy detects and removes spyware, a relatively new kind of threat not yet covered by common anti-virus applications. Spyware silently tracks your surfing behaviour to create a marketing profile for you that is transmitted without your knowledge to the compilers and sold to advertising companies. If you see new toolbars in your Internet Explorer that you haven't intentionally installed, if your browser crashes inexplicably, or if your home page has been "hijacked" (or changed without your knowledge), your computer is most probably infected with spyware. Even if you don't see the symptoms, your computer may be infected, because more and more spyware is emerging. Spybot-S&D is free, so there's no harm giving it a try to see if something has invaded your computer.

wow three hours you must have lots of stuff well you should just start deleting stuff that you dont need that well make more room on your hard drive...have a up to date viruses software and you can download some spy ware and ad-ware programs on line ..and that should help out a lot and what you can do is Defragment your computer and that should help a lot but by just looking at how long it took to various scans your computer it might take awhile to do that but its really good to do that it well make you computer more faster and have more space

On my old one, I removed spyware periodically, and added memory to give the computer more speed. My friend was a computer software engineer, and he recognized most of the spyware and deleted it. the whole thing took two hours, we did not scan the whole thing, we just deleted what he recognized as junk.

no.. the scans take a while and may find problems that take more time to fix, like viruses.
