What does everyone think of assistance programs from the Government, such as Medical Cards, Health Departments, WIC, and Food Stamps? Better yet, what does everyone think of the people on those programs? Just curious if the general idea is the same as mine.. Thanks!

I'm not sure what your general idea is, but I can only answer for myself. I am single mom of a 4 year old. His father left us, and I get no support from him. I have a job, but unfortunately with no benefits. I do receive Medicaid for my son, and thank goodness I do. He has constant allergies and asthma-like conditions that--were it not for Medicaid--he wouldn't be able to get any of his medications. I also receive WIC for him as well which will expire when he turns 5. The strange thing is, I make too much money to qualify for food stamps or TANF.

The programs are in place to help out. I don't agree with ANYONE taking advantage of the system one bit. FICA (taxes) gets taken out of my check just like everyone else's. Hopefully, people use the programs as a help and not using them as a way of life.

Also, I'm attending college to continue my education and earn a degree so that I may provide a better life for myself and my son.

I worked for welfare for 30 years and feel that the programs are great, are meant to be short term and are administered in a very crappy manner. I believe that some of the people who work for welfare have more problems than the people who apply. I think that everyone should qualify for Medicaid because our country should be providing health care to everyone not just the poor or needy. People who try to make a lifetime career of welfare have issues that I really can't tolerate. These programs should be short term except for medical. Every other industrialized nation provides healthcare to their people except us. Some people are on long term welfare just because of the cost of medical. If they lose their welfare, they lose their healthcare. Is this insane or what?

I don't think it should be a way of life. Many of the people on those programs would prefer to have jobs that provide medical insurance, pay enough to afford rent, daycare and groceries but they don't. Most of the people on those programs (at least in Michigan) are required to work to receive benefits. They workfare system call a single mom getting a $9.00/hr position with no benefits a success story. That's not success, it's working poverty. Unless you've lived in that situation you can't possibly have any idea how hard it is.

I was forced to go on welfare! My ex would pay support, if I made minium wage, I made to much to get any assistance. If I worked full time I had $35 left after paying the sitter. All I could do is quit work and stay home with my kids! I finally started cleaning with my girlfriend so I could get off welfare. So don't judge everyone so quickly! If the government would have just helped me pay my sitter...or made my ex pay support!

Some people REALLY need the help. Not everyone on relief is a lazy low life!!

Its fine for those that need them and don't abuse them. I think those that carry a negative opionon about people that use these programs have never come in contact with someone that uses it for its intended purpose and just forms opinons based on heresay and stereotypes.
If a nation fails to accomidate the have nots the have nots will just take from the haves. Thats supposed to be the basic function of govt...to take care of those that cannot or are unable to help themselves until they are in a position to be productive citizens. That way those people can aid someone else in need. The human race thrives as a community after all.
Every nation that has failed to realise this concept has fallen or is faltering.

I think it is sad that people in a country as great and rich as America has to have these resources!
The facts prove that the rich in America are getting richer and the poor are getting poorer!
So there may be a lot of people here that will need those benefits soon!

I think its funny that people **** on the recipients of welfare when they are living hand to mouth.... How about those lazy *** welfare workers that are getting paid to allow it to happen? There's the real beneficiaries of the welfare services.

Persoanlly it stinks. It should only be fore thoses who are mentally ill or diseaed where they can not work. If you have two feet two arms and can speak, then you need to work. When we give stuff away, it drains our economy.
