It varies. First all of all, you didn't ask what size package. They come in many different sizes-fun size for trick-or-treat, regular size that is displayed with the candy at the check-out, 1/2, 3/4, 1, 1 1/2 lb bags as well, and I'm sure there are other sizes. They are sold by weight, not volume or number of individual pieces.

It depends on the size of the package.
If you have a scale, weigh out a set amount, count the M&Ms.
If there are 10 to an ounce, and it is a 16 ounce package, there would be 160.
