Since their resumes are the same and their opinions are bought... Isn't the real reason campaigns focus on smearing the other guy is because there is so little actual difference between the two candidates that this is the only way they can set themselves apart?

No, sadly in this country all people do is listen to sound bites, so campaign ads try to focus on one thing to sway people away from the truth. Like how Bush should have never been reelected but was because the Republicans highlighted gay marriage and the war...two things that scared people away from looking at how bad the administration was/is.

The Republican smear because smearing and hate is all they got.

There is a tremendous difference between the parties and not seeing that demonstrates that you simply don't know what is going on.
