By themselves, not really. The problem is the American way of raising them. Keeping them in a sty, feeding them garbage and not cleaning out the sty frequently enough are the major causes of the smell associated with pigs.

In Germany, many of the farms were built with the "barn" area downstairs and the "house" above it (traps the rising heat from the animals to help keep the place warm in winter). In such an environment, the pigs are kept in concrete pens with straw for them to nestle into to be comfortable. They are also rinsed down frequently to keep them cool in warm weather and the pens cleaned frequently. The smell is virtually non-existant (no worse than a lot of homes I've smelt with dogs living in them!).

Pigs only smell bad if the area they live is not cleaned every day....I have had pigs before.....4 of them and not getting to them in 24 hours i could not even begin to tell you the smell they produce

believe it or not, pigs are one of the cleanest animals in the world. the dirty water they roll in is not their choice. the garbage ppl. feed them is not their choice. they roll in water to get clean and keep flys off. they eat whatever they can get. a pig cannot take a washcloth to his back. nor can a pig brush his teeth. and of course, they can't sit on a toilet. so who stinks, the pigs or the owners?
