I own a 97 Subaru Legacy sedan. It drives very well but has been acting up a little lately.

When I start it in the mornings it has been idleing at close to 2000 rpms.

Should I have the car looked at by a mechanic? Or is that a problem I could handle myself?

Is it really cold? Let the car warm up a minute, it will drop back down

It probably means that your vehicle is functioning as designed.
When ambient air temperatures are lower than normal, the engine requires more fuel to run, the engine control module opens the fuel injectors for a longer period of time and the auxillary air valve allows more air into the engine and it runs at a higher than normal idle speed to help the engine warm up quicker. If the idle speed goes back down after the engine warms up, then all is well.

If the weather is cold, your car should do that, until the engine warms up a bit. I think 2k is a little high though. It should only do that, for a minute or 2. Try starting it, then take it out on the highway, and check to see if it still does it, after a few minutes. Your fuel injectors may need to be cleaned out, also try putting it in low gear, and take it up to almost the max rpm, to clean out the carbon etc, it might just need to be run a little faster, in a low gear to clean it out. Sometimes you can tell, by looking in your rearview mirror to see if any smoke is coming out of your exhaust.. good luck..

Sounds like the automatic choke is sticking. Spray some WD40 on the coil in the choke and it should get rid of the petrochemical deposits which build up and cause this type of problem. If its affordable, get it into the garage for a full check as there are a number of things which could be wrong according to make and age of car. It will cost money in wasted fuel if you don't get it fixed.

It will idle up when cold because the choke is operating. However, as it warms up the idler should idle down. If that isn't happening it could be either the choke or throttle position sensor. It may well be you have a broken or loose vacuum line also.

It's cold out that would be my guess my car does the same when I first start it until it warms up I own a 01 Chevy Malibu, I don't think you have any problems, unless it's been warm by you then you may need a tune up or if that don't work then you have a problem of some sort.

well, im not a professional, but i need more info to be certain... if its been driven for a while does it stay idling at about 2000? if so its a stuck throttle, if not, then its the less likely flooded, or too rich of fuel, if its fuel injected you may need to get the injectors looked at... either way, at least have it looked at

They are made to do that on cold mornings. After they warm up, they will drop back to a normal operating rpm.

If it's a choke, clean and adjust it.
If it is fuel injection, have the cold idle sensor checked.
