There probably are some family law attorneys who had abusive and/or horrible childhoods - there are people in all walks of life who have had such problems. But most of the family law attorneys I know (and I know plenty) are like me - we try to help people solve their problems.

Neither, I think it is just a niche they have found, whether they be there because they have a desire to help in a situation that is one of the most difficult you can think of, or whether it be because they are good at and yes, make money. Some do family law because it is just where the clients are, and therefore they can better make a living and provide for their families. I think there is nothing that would make one think they would have come from bad childhoods, although I'm sure some do, just like psychologist, social workers, teachers, salespersons, etc. I don't think there are any stereotypes out there in the field. Honestly, many likely end up practicing what they do and working where they do because of where they could get their first job and where they are taken.
