To me, it seems like a balanced blend between the two would equate to a good life. On the one hand, great success in career while neglecting family, if one even had a family, seems like a good recipe for lonliness. On the other hand, complete devotion to family with no care of career would lead to poverty and the inability to properly provide for your loved ones. Granted opinions will differ on the subject and I invite mature comments.

You have reached a gray area. Why not a successful career and a happy well balanced family. You do not have to be rich to achieve this. Yes, money is important but why not comfortable. That's why when I answer a lot of questions I wonder about the age group I am talking to. Everything seems to have to be to one extreme or the other.

I gave up a 'successful' job for a non-successful 'not sure how long it's going to last' job that pays much more money. I guess actions mean more than words... but I think it's circumstantial because I don't have a family.
I would actually choose a job that pays the bills and a happier family life.

well I would have to say a rich family life but the two do go hand in hand. how can you have fun and do things with your family without money. that and if your always worrying about your bills then that takes your attention from your children.

I believe rich family life is more important. It is possible to find a career where you can make enough money to live well & comfortably and still have plenty of time to be with your family!
