Several schools offer programs that allow you to combined your grad school education with the Peace-Corps program. I want to do both Peace-Corps and Grad school. None of the school i really want to go to offer this, and the programs are not as academic as i would like. The advantage is saving some time, cool life experience, and tuition would be reduced.

Any thoughts people?

It seems to me that there is a good reason that the programs that combine Peace Corps and graduate level study are "not as academic" as you would like.

One cannot do both well at the same time. Graduate study is a full-time commitment, and so is the Peace Corps. The programs that try to combine both are necessarily going to be half-assed. (Please excuse the language, but it's the best way to express my thought in this case.)

My advice? Do the Peace Corps first. It will enhance your life, as well as your graduate school application, and you'll be more likely to qualify for a fellowship or assistantship later. As you probably know, these awards usually carry full tuition remission, as well as a small living stipend. And any languages you learn while in the Peace Corps may also be invaluable in later graduate study.

Apply to the school you want to go to with the program you want. You can then differ your entrance for the time you are commiting to peace corp. Finish up with Peace Corp and roll right into your graduate program.

My Son and Daughter in law were overwhelmed when they first got to their host country. Just learning the language and customs, getting used to the food and such. Be careful you don't take on to much at once! They loved it, but it was really hard on them at first. They were in Macedonia
