at 17, your options are going to be limited. and without at least a high school education, your options will be further limited.

since it sounds like you don't make a lot of money currently, you should consider going into some sort of commission-based sales. you've got nothing to lose right?

some sales jobs require degrees, but a lot of them don't. you will just need a positive mental attitude, good training, and a good understanding of consumer behavior.

good salespeople will consistently make over $100k per year.

try to sell something that you have an interest in. cars?

Unfortunately jobs that pay well that don't require an education, tend to have something wrong with them, but if you're willing to work hard, then you should be okay. If it's a great job, then they don't need to pay as much for people to do it... the worse the job, the more they need to pay.

You will need a decent resume, but there should be free agencies available to help you put one together.

A few suggestions:
Factory Work: Very tedious, but if you can get into a unionized plant the pay should be pretty good and include benefits.

Seasonal Labour/Piecework: The pay can be very good, but is often only available for part of the year. Depending on where you live, options could include tree planting, tobacco picking, fruit/vegetable picking, logging, commercial fishing. All of these will be hard work, and your pay would depend on how hard you work. If you can get enough months of work in a seasonal job, then you can often get unemployement pay during the off-season.

Construction: You won't get rich, but it's better than retail & if you find the right company then you should be able to work lots of hours.

Serving: Being a waiter or waitress can provide good tips. The more expensive the restaurant, the better the tips. Alcohol sales also help your tips. It can be hard to get into a good job unless you have previous serving experience.

Sales: More and more sales jobs are requiring a college education - especially for business to business sales (where the most money exists). However if you've got the right personality, then the commissions can be good.

Those are the main types of jobs that I would say are likely options for you. The best thing you can do is to network yourself. You should use every connection that you have as an opportunity to find a decent job. Talk to everyone you can think of (friends, friends' parents, neighbors, past teachers, relatives, past employers) about your situation, and your desire to find a well-paying job. They should be able to talk to people they know, and suddenly you've got many people looking for a job for you. Hopefully someone will hire into a better job despite your education if they know you and feel you're capable, or at the very least if they feel bad for you.

LUCK...the government offers a lot of support for single families. They help with child care, school grants and housing. Try all of these before quitting school. Local schools can help find local child care, transportation and just about all help you need. Talk to a local pastor at a church. Many of the women would help with the children, clothes, food and other items. There are so many agencies that help people like you,,,start by calling the local welfare office.

Get a job with the government.

Just out of curiosity, how the hell can a 17 year old be charged with the raising of 5 children if abandoned by their parents. By rights, you should be in a foster home.

Unless of course you're making all this up.

Go to your local employment agency. Go to a temp agency like Manpower. Usually, you have to have experience in something to get paid well. It sounds like you have experience raising children. Childcare doesnt always pay well unless you can do it from home. IF you can, then try that, find out what others charge in your area and put in an ad in craigslist, the local newspaper and anywhere else you possibly can.
